2nd Tour de Boulder

June 30 – July 22nd, 2004

Proposed Team Configurations

The Tour de Boulder will take place this July, concurrent with that other three-week stage race in Europe. This year I want to have a prologue and six stages. The stages will take place at lunchtimes. If you can't make a stage, you can make up the stage on your own time, provided you do this before the start of the next stage. You can gain no time on the real stage winner, but you can lose time. Meaning, you gain nothing by riding the stage faster than the official stage winner.

This year we'd love to have teams in the Tour, ideally at least three with three members each, more is better of course. We'll have winners in the G.C., Points, and KOM. The stages are still being determined, but there will be an ITT prologue, another longer, but not very long ITT that we might turn into a TTT if the team thing works out, a serious climbing stage with a semi-mountain-top finish, two hilly road stages, one flat road stage, and a Criterium.

Points for Hot Spots (Primes) are 3-2-1 (time bonuses are 15-10-5)
Points for all stages are: 10-1 (time bonuses only on stages 1, 3, and 4 are: 20-15-10-5)

KOM Points for Cat. 4: 5-3-1

KOM Points for Cat. 3: 10-7-5-3-1

KOM Points for Cat. 2: 20-15-10-7-5-3-1

KOM Points for Cat. 1: 30-20-15-10-7-5-3-1

KOM Points for Hors Category: 40-30-25-20-15-13-10-7-5-3-1

Wednesday, June 30th: Prologue - NCAR Time Trial - Results

This stage starts at the pavement change at the need of the neighborhood and ends at the first sign on the summit.

Distance: 1.3 miles

Total climbing: 420 feet

Average grade: 6.3%

Climbs: NCAR – Cat. 3 – there are KOM points awarded for the Prologue

Figure 1: NCAR profile. The TT course is equivalent to just one of these humps and not the first one, since that starts further out.

Wednesday, July 7th: Stage 1 - Nelson Road Loop – Results

The stage starts after going through the light at 47th and Jay Road. Ride west on Jay to 36 and follow that north to Nelson Road. Take Nelson road east to 63rd street and follow that to the Diagonal and then follow that south back to Jay road. Take Jay road west and the finish the diamond shaped traffic signal warning sign. This is past all the mailboxes and pretty close to the intersection with 47th street.

The stage is about 20 miles long and involves 820 feet of total climbing.

There are three primes on this stage. The first one is at the green sign indicating the mileage to Ward. This is about 3.4 miles into the stage and is along 36 north of Boulder. The next prime is the green sign indicating the mileage to Lyons and about 3.6 miles from the first prime. The last prime is on 66th street and before any stop signs. It is the brown Lagerman Reservoir sign that is 6.2 miles after the 2nd prime.

Figure 2: Stage 1 profile. Primes at at splits 1, 2, and 3. The finish it at split 4.

Friday, July 9th: Stage 2 - Vortex Individual Time Trial - Results

Starting at the green mileage sign that says “Eldorado Springs 3 miles.” This is just west of the intersection of highway 170 and highway 93.  Ride west on 170 until just before the stone gate. There is a sign there that says “End 170.” You must go past this sign before hanging a U-turn and return to the start. The finish is the same sign that you started at, but it’s back will be too you. It is the only sign with that flat rectangle shape and should be easy to recognize. This is a strange section of road. After the downhill at the start, you bike along a long faux plat, usually with a headwind. You’ll go much faster on the return trip, despite feeling that it was downhill on the way out and uphill on the way back.

Distance: 5.5 miles

Total climbing: 290 feet.

Tuesday, July 13: Stage 3 - Morgul-Koppenburg Out and Back - Cancelled due to big crash

The race starts at Cherryvale and highway 170 and proceeds east on 170 to a right on 74th street behind the CostCo. Then left at the stop sign onto Coal Creek, which is followed out to McCaslin. McCaslin is followed south, up the Hump, up the Wall, and then right (west) on highway 128. This is followed out nearly to highway 93. Make a u-turn just before the road becomes separated by a median. There is a double yellow line median here, but it ends before the road becomes separated by a median. The rule here is that you cannot cross the double yellow line and must do your U-turn between the end of that line and the median. Now follow the same route all the way back to Coal Creek and 74th. Once here, take a left and follow the Koppenburg course out the dirt road, up the steep hill, and out to highway 170. Turn left here and ride back to the start/finish.

Climbs: The Wall – Cat. 4 (1.3 miles, 280 feet, 4.4% ave. grade, the last half mile is at 7.1%); Feed Hill – Cat. 4 (0.7 miles, 180 feet, 4.8% ave. grade); Koppenburg Hill – Cat. 4

The Wall climb ends at the pavement change at the top of the hill

The Feed Hill ends at the green Wind Research Center sign.

Tuesday, July 20: Stage 5 - Old Stage / Lee Hill Lollipop

Results:
I (Jason Fraze) timed us from 5th st. and Lee Hill to Deer Trail. Even though we were taking it easy we topped Old Stage in 12:48 (probably because I attacked Cipo after Eric helped me out with a little push, and then Cipo attacked back and I couldn’t catch him.) We regrouped at the bottom of the Old Stage decent and worked together to get to the base of Lee Hill. As soon as we hit Lee Hill I attacked, but Cipo was quick to counter and dropped me. I worked hard to reel him in and almost caught him, but he finished about 10 seconds ahead of me. (I think he let up a little.) We topped Lee Hill at 39:18.

Description:

Start at Wood Bridge.  Neutral Start up bike path to 46th and Diagonal.  After light race is on.   Go over overpass, make left at Jay Rd.   Go right at 28th St (Hwy 36).   Sprint Point is 400m (?) at small green sign that says "Violet Rd".  Continue climbing to the intersection of Broadway and Hwy 36, make a left using caution when crossing in front of cars pulling out of Broadway.   Make immediate right on Lee Hill Rd.  Continue right up Old Stage Rd.  There will be a short descent before you resume the climb to top.  The KOM is at the large group of mailboxes, the line is the 1st silver mailbox, the name is WILBER.  Descend to Lefthand Canyon, go right.  Make left on Lefthand towards Ward.  Go left on Lee Hill.   KOM is Stop Sign at Deer Trail Rd.  Continue down Lee Hill Rd.  Finish Sprint is the large Green Boulder City Limits Sign.  This is shortly before a slight bend in the road and a Boulder Open Space Parking Lot where there could be cars and pedestrians moving slowly.  As this could potentially be a very fast sprint, please exercise caution and good judgment.  You may want to note this location on the way up.  Re-group at the Boulder Open Space Parking Lot
