The stage starts after going through the light at 47th and Jay Road. Ride west on Jay to 36 and follow that north to Nelson Road. Take Nelson road east to 63rd street and follow that to the Diagonal and then follow that south back to Jay road. Take Jay road west and the finish the diamond shaped traffic signal warning sign. This is past all the mailboxes and pretty close to the intersection with 47th street.
Distance: 20 miles
Elevation Gain: 820 feet.
Fifteen riders showed up for the Nelson Road stage today and at least two riders had already ridden the stage earlier this morning. We had serious, serious winds and at the start, Steve Z. said, "With this many riders and these winds, I can see a crash happening..." That would be prophetic.
We rode neutral to Jay and then team Jeb-and-Eric went to the front and pulled into the wind. Jeb got off the front here, but I don't think he was even trying. Things heated up on 36. My team was well back as we approached the first prime and Steve pulls up next to me and says, "We're going for the prime." I say, "Do we care about those? I'm dead from yesterday and just want to hang on." He says, "What else is there to do?" I'm thinking, "Take it as easy as possible," but don't say anything. We tapped Mark Krebs, who is also on our team, to lead us out and he takes us right to the front, doing an excellent job. We get Jeb and Eric Coppock pinned on the inside and Steve Z. launches. Don also goes, along with Mark Schwab and I. Steve Z. takes the prime and Mark Schwab sits up and I get third, to Don's second. Mark immediately counter-attacks and things are pretty shattered now. Somewhere along here there is a crash and Kevin and two or three others go down! Kevin trashes his wheel and he's out for the stage and limps back to town. The rest of us sit-up for a long while until everything comes back together. This works greatly to the advantage of anyone riding the stage earlier or later, as they can gain time on riders who don't win the stage. This doesn't seem completely fair. Anyone got any ideas?
Anyway, it all comes together again, but I don't see Mark Krebs or Rob Karman, our other teammates. Here Don attacks and Steve, Mark Schwab, and Eric Coppock go with him. Juan is just in front of me and he won't chase it down, nor will I. The gap grows and grows and I figure that's the end of that, but then big Jon Baker (Pro/1/2 rider) comes to the front and pulls back the break single-handedly. I ride his wheel all the way and we come back together again. Steve Z. tells me to lead him out for the second prime and I bury myself doing this just. No one else goes and I get second, but Mark Schwab is on my wheel and, surprise, surprise, he attacks. Steve Z. grabs his wheel and I barely hang on, but I'm gassed. I lose the wheel and Don jumps around me and gets on. I'm in no man's land and sit up until Jeb, Eric Coppock, and Jon Baker come by. I hop on their train and we hammer. I can't pull throw and don't even know if I should with my teammate up the way, as we fly east on Nelson. I'm completely spun out in my 12 and if the pace picks up a tenth of a mile per hour more, I'm off.
We make the turn south onto 63rd and we're echelon-ing four across the road. I finally start to take a pull, but it's brief. I don't want these guys to drop me. We go hard for awhile, ignoring the last prime as it was only three deep and the group up the road got them all. I think Mark or Don won it and I don't' think anyone contested it. A ways along here, Eric cracks and goes off the back. I'm taking turns with Don, but my turns are brief. Jeb drops back and pulls Eric back to the group! This was a HUGE effort by Jeb and it paid off. They come back to us and we work together to Jay Road. Jeb leads out Eric for fourth place and I refuse to go by Jon after he pulled me around the entire stage. Eric finishes in 52:56, Jeb a couple seconds back, and Jon and I at 53:06. The stage was won by my teammate, the wily Steve Z. in 51:32.
