Stage 2: Vortex Time Trial

The stage starts at the green mileage sign that says “Eldorado Springs 3 miles.” This is just west of the intersection of highway 170 and highway 93.  Ride west on 170 until just before the stone gate. There is a sign there that says “End 170.” You must go past this sign before hanging a U-turn and return to the start. The finish is the same sign that you started at, but it’s back will be too you. It is the only sign with that flat rectangle shape and should be easy to recognize. This is a strange section of road. After the downhill at the start, you bike along a long faux plat, usually with a headwind. You’ll go much faster on the return trip, despite feeling that it was downhill on the way out and uphill on the way back.

Distance: 5.5 miles

Elevation Gain: 290 feet.

A big group (at least fifteen) showed up for this. We tried to go off at 30-second intervals in a specific order, but it got all screwed up. Matson and Erin both proved that watches are complicated devices. Here’s the formula for calculating your watch-screw-up penalty:

            (15 seconds) * gender_constant

where the gender_constant values are as follows:

female = 0

male = 1

Matson = 2

Schwab showed up in a time trial bike and won the stage. Steve Z. had tri-bars and a skinsuit and got second. Don didn’t need a gimmicks to pound out an impressive 11:58 and take third. Eric had his bars and a skinsuit and when he went flying by me, I felt like I was going backwards. Hopefully, it was like Armstrong flying by Mayo and I can make up some of the lost time in the mountains. He moves by me in the G.C. slot with a terrific ride.

Jeb was the last guy to break 13 minutes and then Kreighton was just over thirteen. Time trailing is his thing, though, as he’s a terrific runner as well. Jason Fraze is a triathlete and so is also a decent time trialist. In fact, everyone rode strong today and no one, so far, was over fourteen minutes. The bunch at the top got rearranged a bit, with Mark Schwab back in yellow. Steve is in second and also is the points leader. Don is less than thirty seconds back.

Next week is going to be interesting. Morgul-Koppenburg (Tuesday) and then the Stazio Crit (Thursday).

Oh, these standings will likely change somewhat as some very strong riders have yet to ride it (Baker, Cawley, Koski, “Crash” Krebs, etc.). Hence the points will likely change as well.
